An American history survey course with an emphasis on African-American, Asian-American, and Latino- and Latina-American lived experiences and social struggles from the US civil war era into the twenty first century. Course contains topics including reconstruction and erosion of civil rights for African Americans, immigration from Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, issues of nativism and white supremacy in society, culture, and public policy, American imperialism at home and abroad, public policy and growth of the prison state, and modern civil rights movements emphasizing political rights and cultural and social empowerment.
